Document N° 04
Refunds & care.
Handmade work cannot be returned the way mass-produced goods can. This document is honest about that — and clear about every situation in which you do get your money back. U.S. customers only.
Effective April 2026 · Plain English, lawyer-checked
The short version. Free cancellation up to concept approval. After that, the piece is non-refundable. If we ship a defective or damaged piece, we remake or refund — including shipping. Wood is a living material; here's how to keep it healthy.
1. Cancellation timeline
- Before concept preview is sent — full refund, no questions, processed within 5 business days.
- After concept preview, before approval — full refund, less a small concept fee that covers the maker's drafting time. The fee is shown to you before you confirm the order.
- After concept approval — production begins. The piece becomes non-refundable except as set out in §3 and §4 below.
2. Why handmade work is non-refundable once cut
Each piece is made for one person, in their wood, with their inscription. We cannot resell it to anyone else. Cutting begins only after you approve the concept preview, which is the moment we ask you to be certain. Until then, you are not committed.
3. Defects and damage
If your piece arrives with a manufacturing defect or shows shipping damage, contact us within 14 days of delivery with photographs. We will:
- remake and re-ship at our cost; or
- refund the full price including original shipping, at your choice.
Slight grain variation, knot patterning, and tonal differences between boards are not defects — they are the medium. Our concept preview shows the actual board scheduled for your piece.
4. Late delivery
If your piece misses the lead time confirmed at order by more than 14 days, and the delay is within our control (not customs, not weather, not carrier strike), you may cancel for a full refund of price and shipping.
5. State consumer-protection rights
There is no federal cooling-off period for online purchases. (The FTC's three-day rule applies only to certain in-person sales above $25; it does not apply to online commissions.) Your state may grant additional rights under its consumer-protection or "lemon" statutes, and where it does, those rights apply in full. Nothing in this document waives or limits any non-waivable right granted by the law of the U.S. state where you reside.
Examples of state laws that may apply, depending on your residence: the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (California), the Magnuson- Moss Warranty Act (federal, applicable nationwide), and similar consumer-protection statutes in New York, Texas, and elsewhere.
6. Limited Lifetime Structural Warranty
This is a Limited Warranty for the purposes of the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. We guarantee the structural integrity of the woodwork for the lifetime of the original purchaser. If a joint opens, a panel splits along grain, or the finish develops cracking not caused by misuse, we repair the piece free of charge. You pay shipping to the studio; we cover everything else, including return shipping back to you. Full warranty terms, including what is and isn't covered, are set out in §8 of Terms of Commission.
Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights; you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
7. Care for your piece
Wood breathes. Treat it the way you would a good cutting board or a leather-bound book.
- Keep it out of direct, prolonged sunlight — UV slowly bleaches tone.
- Avoid placing on heated surfaces (radiators, hearth mantels with live fires below).
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, a barely-damp microfibre cloth, then dry immediately.
- Once a year, rub a small amount of food-grade beeswax balm over the surface and buff. We include a tin of our own balm with every piece; refills are sold at cost.
- Do not submerge or run under a tap.
8. How to start a refund or remake
Email [email protected] from the address used at order, with the order reference and (for damage claims) photographs of the issue. We respond within 3 business days and resolve within 14.
